Cleansing crystals is essential to maintain their harmonious vibration and pure energy, whether they are used as decorative elements or as instruments.
Why is cleansing crystals important?
The powerful energy of Full Moons always reveals how much strength and purity we deprive our environment of if our crystals and talismans are not allowed to cleanse in the moonlight. Since stones can absorb everything they protect us from, without regular energetic cleansing they may lose their supportive effect. Of course, the light of the Full Moon is not always the best method, so let’s look at which crystal-cleansing methods are worth exploring.
Cleansing crystals is especially important because these minerals become saturated with energetic imprints – they pick up subtle vibrations from their environment even when simply sitting on a shelf, and even more so when worn as jewelry or used as instruments. They absorb the energies they protect us from or transform. If these energies accumulate, the crystal’s function weakens and its beneficial effects eventually empty out. This is why cleansing crystals at least once per moon cycle is necessary to restore their original clarity and vibration.

Methods for cleansing crystals
Crystals can be cleansed in several ways, depending on the type of stone, as not every mineral tolerates the same process. Water cleansing, for example, is simple and effective but not suitable for water-soluble stones such as selenite. Copper-containing malachite is also unsuitable, as water can make it dull and toxic when in contact with the skin.
Sunlight or moonlight are also popular methods, though strong sun can fade certain stones such as rose quartz. Smudging with herbs like white sage or palo santo provides gentle yet powerful energetic cleansing, while burying in the earth results in deeper, slower purification. Cleansing crystals always requires care to avoid damage and achieve the best results.
Common techniques for cleansing crystals
When cleansing crystals, different methods may bring different results depending on the stone:
- Running water: Holding a crystal under cool or lukewarm water for a few minutes can wash away excess energies. However, this should be avoided for water-soluble minerals such as selenite or kyanite, as it may damage them.
- Moonlight: The light of the Full Moon is gentle yet highly effective. Leaving crystals in moonlight for a few hours restores their original vibration and also recharges them. Judy Hall, author of The Crystal Bible, notes that white and light-colored crystals respond particularly well to cleansing and charging under moonlight.
- Sunlight: Crystals can also be charged in sunlight. Bright red and yellow stones benefit most from solar cleansing, while some brown crystals respond well to being buried in the earth.
- Burying in earth: The energy of the soil helps restore crystals to their natural state. Burying them for a day allows them to cleanse with deep, ancient energy. This method is especially beneficial for strongly grounding stones such as smoky quartz, hematite, jaspers, volcanic obsidian, and protective black tourmaline.
- Salt and saltwater: Sea salt is a powerful cleanser that draws out negative energy. However, its coarse grains can scratch softer stones, so be selective. It is enough to place the crystals on or bury them in a bowl of salt.
- Smudging: The smoke of white sage, palo santo, or other herbs gently cleanses crystals. Smudging not only affects the stone but also harmonizes the surrounding energy, making it particularly suitable before meditation.
- Using other crystals: Selenite and clear quartz are especially effective in cleansing other stones. Placing smaller crystals on a selenite slab or a large quartz cluster restores their clarity.
What to consider when cleansing crystals, especially crystal instruments?
Cleansing crystals is not just a technical process but a mindful practice. Always consider the characteristics of the stones: protect water-sensitive ones from running water, avoid direct sunlight for light-sensitive crystals, and do not use salt on porous or soft minerals. During cleansing, it is helpful to set an intention, focusing lovingly on the crystals. This way, cleansing not only benefits the stones but also helps us invite purer, more harmonious energies into our everyday lives.
For instruments made of crystal – such as quartz singing bowls, bells, gongs, or chimes – slightly different aspects must be considered compared to smaller stones. Here, physical care is as important as energetic cleansing. Wipe them with a soft, damp cloth to remove dust, fingerprints, and residue. Avoid chemicals, as quartz and other crystals may react to strong cleaning agents, and such harsh energy is not something we want to transmit through their ethereal sounds. If needed, use mildly soapy water, rinse thoroughly, and dry completely.
The crystal instrument’s own vibration can also energetically cleanse itself. Gently playing the instrument allows its resonance to “shake off” accumulated energies. Smudging can also be used: waving sage, palo santo, frankincense, or other herbs around the instrument will clear its energy. Full Moon light can also be used with instruments – simply place them near a window or outside where moonlight can reach them. However, large crystal instruments such as singing bowls should not be placed under running water, as the water pressure may damage or crack them.
