The balance of shaft and head
The 3 cm head diameter is a deliberate choice: large enough to fully voice the rich fundamental tone of 14-22 cm singing bowls, yet light enough to allow subtle dynamic shading. The 18 cm shaft gives a good in-hand weight, so you can easily control the circular motion around the rim.
How to play it
There are two basic techniques. The first is striking: touch the head of the mallet to the outer rim of the bowl and let the vibration fade naturally. The second is circling: hold the mallet upright and run it along the rim with steady pressure — this produces a continuous, singing tone. This medium mallet is an excellent starting point for both techniques.
Which bowls it suits
Versatile in use: works with Tibetan metal-alloy bowls (14-22 cm diameter), aluminium singing bowls and larger crystal bowls. Crystal bowls are sometimes played with leather- or felt-wrapped mallets to protect the more sensitive surface, but the plain wooden head is also safe with appropriate pressure.
Care and storage
Keep it dry and away from direct sunlight so the wood holds its shape. Do not wash with water — wipe off dust with a soft cloth. The wood smooths over time with use and takes on a personal character in your hand.
