The Sound Character of the 70 cm Wind Gong
This 70 cm diameter wind gong (Feng gong) produces full, balanced base tone; with the visual message of the Chinese balance symbol. The flat surface of the bronze (copper-tin alloy) provides the long-resonating, softly unfolding base tone refined by centuries of traditional Chinese gong-making experience. We recommend you strike it gently with a padded mallet: this way the sound comes to life softly, and the full overtone spectrum can clearly unfold.
Wind Gong and Chau Gong – the Difference
The wind gong (Chinese name Feng gong) has a flat, round shape with no cylindrical raised rim – this distinguishes it from the Chau gong (Tamtam). The rimless design produces: a clearer base tone, longer sustained decay, and freer propagation of overtones. If you have previously played a Chau gong, you will quickly feel the different character of the two types: the wind gong gives a more airy, more wind-like sound.
The Word "Feng" and the Traditional Background
"Feng" means wind in Chinese – hence the wind gong name. According to Chinese tradition, this type of gong gives a sound reminiscent of the soft movement of the wind: not aggressive, not sudden, but arriving in gradually unfolding waves. In ancient ceremonial practices, the Feng gong was associated with the flowing energies of nature. Today, you receive a musical instrument in your hands that is the continuation of this centuries-old tradition.
Modern Use – Who We Recommend It For
sound therapy spaces where visual symbolism matters. In our experience, sound therapists, yoga teachers, meditation practitioners, and group sound bath leaders all benefit from this size. The 70 cm version is especially suitable for medium and larger groups. We recommend you first try the gong in a calm environment to get to know its unique sound character.
Accessories and Hand-Made Craftsmanship
A soft (padded) gong mallet is included with your purchase – we provide it free of charge. Wind gongs are made by hand in China: the small surface irregularities and patina markings on the piece you purchase are natural consequences of forging, not flaws – this is precisely what makes each example unique. The bronze surface gently develops a patina over time, which only increases the instrument's character. We can guarantee you that you are holding a genuine, traditionally crafted instrument.
