Smooth, tumbled white moonstone with a pearly sheen floating over a milky-white body. The larger, assorted size makes a lovely palm stone, decoration or collector’s piece.
The stone of white moonstone
Moonstone is the pearly variety of feldspar (orthoclase); its characteristic soft, floating bluish-white glow – adularescence – comes from the stone’s internal layered structure. Its Mohs hardness is around 6–6.5. In crystal lore it is known as a stone of intuition, emotional openness and new beginnings, and tradition links it with the Moon, with cycles and with the crown chakra.
The tumbled form and A quality
Tumbled stones gain their smooth surface through long polishing, which brings out moonstone’s pearly glow. A-quality pieces show a fine, floating light; as a natural mineral, the light and shape can differ, and every stone is unique.
Ways to use it
Moonstone is a favourite palm stone and meditation piece, and its gentle glow makes it a tender gift. It looks lovely on a bedside table, in a crystal corner or cupped in the hand.
Care and good to know
Moonstone is moderately hard (Mohs around 6–6.5) and a little cleavable, so protect it from knocks and scratches and store it apart. Wipe it with a soft, barely damp cloth; long soaking is best avoided.
