What a tingsha is and where it comes from
The tingsha (a pair of small cymbals) is a traditional sound instrument present in many Asian cultures. Tibetan and Nepali ritual practices have used it for centuries, and today it remains a widely loved choice for meditation, presence exercises and space clearing. Two identical brass discs are joined by a leather cord, and striking them together produces a clear, high tone.
Characteristics of the plain finish
This piece has an undecorated surface, showing the bare metallic shimmer of brass. The sound of a plain tingsha is purer and sharper than that of engraved versions, because the smooth surface vibrates evenly. The tone lingers for several seconds while you listen to it slowly fade.
Dimensions, materials and finish
Both discs measure 6 cm in diameter and the pair weighs 165 grams together. The material is brass, durable and developing a patina over time. The connecting leather cord conveniently holds the two discs close to each other, making it easy to sound them. Handcrafted in Nepal, so slight unevenness on the surface is natural and makes each piece unique.
How to use it
Hold one cord in each hand and gently strike the discs together. The tone arises immediately and slowly fades. Another method: hold one disc horizontally on your palm and touch its edge with the other – this creates a swinging, pulsating sound. This is especially favoured during space-clearing practices, when the tingsha is sounded in the four corners of a room.
Storage and maintenance
Brass develops a natural patina over time. If you prefer a cleaner look, occasionally polish the surface gently with a soft cloth. Do not use chemicals or abrasives. Check the condition of the leather cord from time to time and replace it if you notice wear. Store in a dry place, away from direct sunlight and moisture.
