What characterises the medium Kuro-orin bowl?
The medium-sized Kuro-orin type is made with a restrained, darker-toned surface. Due to the larger diameter, the base tone is deeper and fuller than that of smaller versions, so the bowl is especially suited for use in quiet home spaces. The surface is not decorated with engraving but has a simple, clean look.
How can you play it?
You can produce two kinds of sound with the included wooden mallet. Tapping the rim with the soft side gives a deep base tone that rings out long. Moving the mallet around the outer rim with steady motion makes the bowl sing, and the sound slowly, gradually fills the room. The medium size gives a good balance between sound richness and easy handling.
For what occasions do we recommend it?
It is a good choice for a short morning calming, evening rest, opening or closing yoga practice, accompanying breathing exercises and introducing meditation. Many also choose it for the study, where a short daily attention break helps refocus. It also makes a welcome gift for a family member, dear friend or colleague.
Where should you place it?
The bowl sounds best when placed on a smooth, level surface with a soft pad. Avoid draughty and very cold places and the close proximity of a radiator. It looks good in a living room, study, beside a yoga mat, on a low table or on a bookshelf, and it itself creates a quiet mood.
How to care for it?
You can regularly wipe it with a soft, dry textile and occasionally with a slightly damp cloth, then dry it well. Avoid abrasive sponges and corrosive cleaners, as they reduce the look of the surface. With proper care the bowl will keep its deep, full tone for a long time.
