The upper small size of the Csö-pa family
The roughly 12 cm rim is the upper small size of the Csö-pa family: it already voices a full, gently extended chime. You receive a sound that is more serious than the 11 cm version yet still belongs to an easily manageable category.
How it fits into everyday life
We recommend it to you for desk meditation, for morning or evening home practice and as a gentle signal in a yoga class. Because of the fuller chime it is also clearly audible in a larger room, and sounded a few times in a row it is also suitable for real, short sound work. It is a particularly favoured size for teachers and instructors.
Size and hand
The 12 cm rim is already more substantial, yet still palm-sized. You can reach two fingers under the rim, making the candlestick-like hold easy to manage. Those who prefer to set it down should use a soft pad so the tone can unfold beautifully.
Two playing styles
Tapping with a wooden-tipped mallet gives a clear, ringing fundamental. Circling the rim with a fabric- or leather-wrapped mallet brings out a longer, softer ring. Slow, patient movement: at this size, this is the key for you.
Care
Wipe with a dry, soft cloth after use. Do not use chemical cleaners. Fine scratches and a small patina may develop on the surface; these are natural traces of hand-finished work and of use, and they are not flaws. Keep it protected from dust, away from direct sunlight and damp rooms, preferably on a soft textile cover or in a small felt pouch. If you regularly carry it with you for your teaching or instructor work, it is worth getting a small case to protect the sensitive rim. With proper care you receive the same full, gently extended chime for decades, and your sessions always begin with the same fine opening.
