The Medicine Buddha – Sangye Menla
The flags show the image and mantra of the Medicine Buddha, called Sangye Menla in Tibetan – a special, healing-related manifestation of Buddha Shakyamuni. In the Tibetan Buddhist tradition people turn to Him when seeking physical and inner balance and support. You invite a thoughtful, deeply meaningful presence into your own home.
The structure of the flags
This string consists of ten flags of 20 x 20 centimetres, with a total length of 210 centimetres. The central column carries the mantra of the Medicine Buddha, while short English explanations appear along the sides. The fabric is a blend of 70% cotton and 30% polyester, giving a homely feeling and remaining durable in outdoor use.
How you can use the string
Many people place this string in the room of a relative who is ill or recovering, so that the home and relationships are surrounded by gentle, healing attention. Others choose it for a garden, terrace, therapy or meditation room. You may even stretch it across a home yoga corner so that its presence becomes stronger during practice.
Placement tips
Because of its larger size the string calls for a more spacious place: a garden, a covered terrace, a stairwell or above a wide window. Stretch it between two firm points so the wind can reach it well. By tradition the flags should not be dropped on the ground or touched with the feet; when taken down, pack them away respectfully.
Care and lifespan
The cotton-polyester fabric withstands outdoor conditions well, but prolonged sun and rain slowly fade the colours – by tradition this is precisely how the mantra reaches the surroundings. Indoors a soft brush is suitable for dusting; we do not recommend the washing machine. When you replace your outdoor string, the new one can be for you a symbol of renewed attention and care.
