The meaning of Lungta – the Wind Horse

Lungta means Wind Horse in Tibetan, and in the Tibetan Buddhist tradition it is one of the most well-known symbols of good fortune, success and well-being. On the back of the horse depicted in the centre of the flags appears the wish-fulfilling jewel, surrounded by four mythical animals: garuda, naga, snow lion and tiger. You place a traditional, layered image in your home.

The large-sized flags

This string consists of ten flags of 20 x 20 centimetres, with a total length of 210 centimetres, which suits open-air settings and more spacious indoor places equally well. The large surface is more impressive and clearly perceivable from the garden or terrace, and the texts are easier to read. The fabric is 70% cotton and 30% polyester, creating a balance between natural feel and durability.

The figures and their message

Around the Wind Horse four guardian animals appear on the flags: in the upper-left corner the garuda, in the upper-right the naga (serpent spirit), in the lower-left the snow lion and in the lower-right the tiger. The English text along the sides adds short explanations to the mantras printed in the central column. This way the string is not only decorative but also a small journey of teachings for you.

Where to place the string

Because of the larger size we recommend it for gardens, terraces, fences or larger indoor spaces – such as stairwells or community rooms. Stretch it between two firm points so the wind can reach it well. By tradition the force of the Wind Horse spreads precisely when the flags flutter. Indoors it may also be hung across a wide window frame or on a beam.

Care and lifespan

The cotton-polyester fabric withstands outdoor conditions well, but prolonged sun, rain and wind slowly fade the flags. By tradition this natural wear is itself the sign of the blessing mantras spreading. Indoors a soft brush or dry cloth is best for dusting; we do not recommend the washing machine.
