A family-size cast iron teapot

This tetsubin-style 1.2 litre pot is made for family use or for welcoming guests. Its thick black cast iron walls hold the heat evenly, so the tea stays hot through a long conversation. There is no enamel inside, so the iron meets the water directly: tea drinkers say this gives the tea its fuller, deeper flavour.

Size, weight, material

Capacity 1.2 l, weight about 1695 grams. Cast iron with a black exterior and an uncoated iron surface inside. The larger size easily holds 4-6 cups of tea at once. An instruction leaflet is included in English, Dutch, German, French, Italian and Spanish.

Seasoning before first use

Put a small cup of green tea leaves in the pot and fill it about two thirds with water. Boil for 20 minutes, then turn off the heat and let it sit for another 5-6 minutes. Pour out the dark water. Then refill with clean water and boil 6-8 times until the water comes out clear. This is how the gentle protective layer between the iron and the tannin forms, keeping the pot safe from rust.

What to expect over longer use

After a few days, small reddish dots and white spots may appear inside, and over time the whole inner surface may turn reddish brown. This is entirely natural, and there is no need to remove or wash it as long as the water comes out clear. This layer is what protects the iron. After use, always let the pot dry fully.

What to watch out for when cleaning

Do not use washing-up liquid. Rinse with clean warm water and, if needed, use a soft brush. Do not leave water or tea inside for long. When storing, keep the lid slightly lifted so air can circulate. With careful use, this pot can be a faithful companion for decades.
