A traditional cast iron teapot for everyday use
The tetsubin is a traditional Japanese-style cast iron teapot, loved by generations of tea drinkers. This 0.6 litre version has no enamel inside, so water meets the iron directly. Tea makers who know iron say this gives the fullest flavour: the mineral iron gently enriches the tea, while the thick walls hold the heat evenly.
Size, weight, material
Capacity 0.6 l, weight around 1140 grams. Made of cast iron with a black exterior and an uncoated iron surface inside. The pot comes with an instruction leaflet in several languages (English, Dutch, German, French, Italian, Spanish) to guide the correct seasoning.
How to season it before first use
Before the first use, put a small cup of green tea leaves in the pot and fill it about two thirds with water. Boil for 20 minutes, then turn off the heat and let it stand for another 5-6 minutes. Pour out the dark water. Then refill with clean water and boil 6-8 times until the water comes out clear. This creates a protective layer between the tea’s tannins and the iron, helping to prevent rust.
What to expect over time
After a few uses, small reddish dots and white spots may appear inside; after longer use, the whole inner surface can turn reddish. If the water stays clear, there is no need to scrub or remove this; it is part of the natural protective layer. After use, let the empty pot dry fully.
Cleaning, care, a long life
Do not use washing-up liquid, as it removes the protective layer. Rinse with clean warm water and gently clean with a soft brush. Always let it dry completely inside before storing, as leftover water can cause rust over time. Used with care, this pot can keep you company for decades.
