Teak wood – made for everyday kitchen use
Teak is one of the most durable tropical hardwoods, prized in kitchen tools for its high natural oil content. The oils protect the wood against moisture and warping, which makes a teak mortar reliable even when used daily. The grain on each piece is slightly different, so your mortar has its own character from the first day.
A balanced medium size
The medium format is a practical everyday choice: large enough to grind a useful portion of herbs or peppercorns, small enough to keep on the worktop without taking over the space. The base is stable, and the rim is shaped to give a firm grip while you work.
What it does well
Use the mortar for coarse salt, pepper, cumin, coriander, cardamom or dried herbs such as rosemary and thyme. It is equally good for a quick pesto, a herb butter or a spice rub. The wood base will not transfer metallic notes to delicate ingredients, so flavours come through cleanly.
Care and longevity
Wash the mortar by hand with a soft sponge and mild detergent. Avoid soaking the wood and skip the dishwasher. Wipe dry and let it air-dry naturally. Every few months you can rub the inside with a little food-safe oil – coconut or linseed work well – to keep the surface nourished.
