Sound and character
The monochord side gives the classic deep, floating overtone hum that is ideal for meditation, sound baths and sound therapy alike. Plucking the tambura strings opens up a completely different world: a full, ringing, fifth-based accompaniment, the same kind that supports virtuoso playing in classical Indian music. By sliding the jiva (threads) under the strings, they begin to buzz gently — and the tambura comes to life.
How to use
The monochord side comes alive with long, bow-like sweeping strokes; the tambura side is played by plucking. Using both sides together creates a particularly meditative, rich sound space. An exciting option for sound therapists, yoga teachers and sound artists.
Why this product
If you are looking for an instrument that combines the meditative quality of the monochord with the musical foundation of the Indian tambura, this single instrument gives you both. Two instruments in one — for travel, therapeutic practice and serious sound work.
Care tips
- Always retune before use — long transport affects tuning
- Experiment with the jiva threads in different positions for varying buzz
- The tuner makes it easier to set D precisely
- Do not overtighten the strings — they may snap
