Sugar Baby watermelon is one of the home garden's favourite traditional varieties. Early-ripening, so you can enjoy your first fresh melon by mid-summer. The fruit is round, 3–4 kg, with a marbled dark green rind, and inside the bright red, sweet, juicy flesh awaits. Compact enough for even small gardens.
Growing
Sow in April into seed trays, or directly in the garden in early May. Prefers a warm, sunny spot. Spacing: 1 metre between plants, 1.5 metres between rows, as the vines spread nicely.
The watermelon ripens from late July to early August. Perfect for fresh eating, served chilled — the taste of summer at its best. Pick when the tendril nearest the fruit dries up.
