The larger-headed suede mallet is made for sound-bath facilitators and serious home practitioners who work with larger (above 30 cm) bowls. The larger head gives enough impulse to the bowl so that its deep base tone fully unfolds, without you having to strike it forcefully. In our experience it also offers a safe entry into sound work for home practitioners, and you will quickly find your own rhythm with it.
Why head size matters with a large bowl
A small-headed striker has difficulty starting the deep tone of a large bowl. The larger head, on the other hand, helps with its mass: a light touch is enough for the full tone of the bowl to emerge. Your wrist will not tire during the session.
Tonal character
The soft suede gives a soft, deep base tone. Because of the larger head, the base tone sounds more intensely, while overtones build up slowly and richly. This is an ideal condition for guiding into a deeper meditative state.
Who uses it most often
Sound therapists, yoga teachers, and retreat leaders who specifically use a large bowl. For home practitioners it is recommended if they prefer the deep tone of a larger bowl to the finer ring of smaller bowls.
Grip and technique
Hold it in the middle or upper third of the shaft, loosely. You do not need to swing the larger-headed striker forcefully – the weight of the head does most of the work. After a few tries you will feel the favourable motion.
Care
Keep it in a dry place and protect it from being dropped. Dust the surface with a dry cloth. With proper handling it keeps its shape and the character of its tone for years. Do not use water or chemicals for cleaning.
