The sound character of the small De-Wa bowl
This 12.5 cm singing bowl is part of the De-Wa finish series. You hold a carefully shaped vessel with a smooth inner wall that produces a clearer, higher-pitched base tone. When you tap the rim or run a mallet around it, the sound gradually fills the space and lingers gently in the room after the rim has stopped moving. This calm fade pairs well with attention training and with following the rhythm of your breath.
How you can use this 12.5 cm size
The bowl is made for tabletop use and individual practice. For a morning tune-in, after one or two soft strikes simply listen to the resonance for a few minutes and let your breath ride along with it. For an evening wind-down, dim the main light and follow each exhalation with the slowly fading ring. The bowl fits a desk, a small shelf or a meditation cushion equally well, so it finds its place in your daily routine easily.
The surface and the marks of hand polishing
The surface receives its final tone through hand polishing, so every piece carries an individual character. Small, faint marks and gentle irregularities show the handwork; these are not flaws but natural signs of the finishing process. The material slowly develops a patina with use, and over time the tone becomes a little warmer and deeper. Wiping it occasionally with a soft, dry cloth preserves the character of the surface for a long time.
How to play it step by step
The bowl sounds at its best when you do not rush the playing. Hold the mallet by its middle grip and start running it around the outer side of the rim slowly and at an even pace. The first circles give only a soft whisper, then the metal settles in and the sustained base tone emerges. Moving the mallet too fast or pressing too hard can turn the pleasant ring into a harsh scraping, so it is worth starting quietly and patiently. A single soft tap on the side of the rim is also a fine starting move.
Storage in a smaller home space
Place the bowl on a flat, level surface, ideally on a soft pad or cushion so that nothing dampens the resonance. Keep it away from radiators and direct sunlight so that the surface tone stays unchanged for longer. For cleaning, a soft, dry or lightly damp cloth is enough; do not use harsh detergents. If the bowl is dropped or knocked against a hard object, the rim can dent, so always lift it with both hands.
