This black-coloured Shiva Nataraj statue shows one of the deepest symbols of the Hindu tradition: the cosmic dance. The 15 cm figure comes from a Nepalese workshop, is made of polyresin and renders the classical iconography with careful detail.
Who is Shiva Nataraj?
In the Hindu tradition, Shiva is a divine being honoured as the god of destruction and renewal. The word Nataraj literally means king of the dance – in this form Shiva performs the cosmic dance. The ring of flames in which he stands represents the constant cycle of creation and dissolution.
Details of the iconography
The figure forms ancient gestures with four arms: one hand holds a drum (the rhythm of creation), another a flame (destruction), a third forms a protective gesture (abhaya mudra), and the fourth points towards the lower foot (the promise of liberation). The figure dances on the back of a dwarf representing ignorance.
Polyresin as a material
Polyresin tolerates the conditions of a meditation room: it does not break as easily as ceramic and renders the fine carving details thoroughly. The black surface is matte and rich, looking good in settings of wood, stone or textile.
Where to place it at home
You may put it on a meditation altar, on a higher shelf of a bookcase, or in the centre of a separate round tray. You will likely see how the dark colour and the dynamic pose invite a meditative attention.
Care and lifetime
A soft dry cloth or a gentle brush is enough for cleaning – avoid abrasive sponges. Do not keep it in long direct sunlight, as polyresin colour can fade over time. Store it on a stable surface.
