The Shiva eye is a remarkable natural semi-precious stone found on the riverbanks of India. On its surface concentric, circular colours trace the illusion of an eye – hence its name. The stone is also known as Sulemani Hakik and is a type of agate. It measures about 2 cm.
Geology and appearance
Agate is a microcrystalline quartz whose banded, ringed pattern forms naturally. On Shiva eye pieces this pattern creates the characteristic 'eye' shape, in soft brown, cream and greyish shades. As this is a natural stone, every piece is unique: colour, marking and size may vary slightly.
The stone in tradition
Tradition holds the Shiva eye as a protective stone, said to keep negative energies at bay and to cleanse the aura. Many people associate it with the third eye chakra and believe it supports clarity, insight and intuition. These are traditional ideas that belong to the spiritual story of the stone.
Use and care
The stone looks lovely in a meditation corner, held in the hand as a palm stone, or arranged in a collection. Its small size makes it easy to carry in a pocket or a little pouch, and it makes a thoughtful, meaningful gift. Wipe it with a soft cloth to keep it clean; avoid harsh chemicals and prolonged moisture so the stone's natural glow lasts.
