An oval white stone that fits in the palm, with a silky sheen and the Triple Goddess symbol on its surface. At about 5.5 × 4 × 1.5 cm, its moon-white glow radiates stillness and peace, and it makes a favourite accent for a meditation corner, a moon altar or a bedside table.
Selenite, the moon-white stone
The silky white stone sold as selenite is in fact satin spar, the fibrous, lustrous form of gypsum. It takes its name from Selene, the Greek goddess of the moon; its milk-white, moon-like glow evokes stillness and peace. Tradition knows it as a stone of purity and pure light.
The Triple Goddess symbol
The Triple Goddess symbol, with the image of the waxing, full and waning moon, represents the threefold nature of the Maiden, the Mother and the Crone – the goddess of the Moon, the Earth and birth. The sign is a symbol of the natural cycles of life and femininity, and suits the moon-white selenite especially well.
Properties and size
The stone is made from natural selenite (satin spar) and measures about 5.5 × 4 × 1.5 cm. Selenite is a soft, water-sensitive mineral, so its surface can scratch gently; the silky bands of light vary from piece to piece.
Care
Selenite is soft and sensitive to water, so soaking is not advised. Keep it away from moisture, knocks and scratches; a soft, dry cloth is the best way to clean it.
