The root of an Indian grass
Vetiver is a tall grass native to India, and its scent lies in its roots. In India the roots are woven into mats that are hung in windows or doorways in summer and sprinkled with water, so the air drifting in carries their scent. Its Hindi name is khus. Thanks to its deep roots it also holds the soil together, so farmers plant it along the edges of fields.
If sweet scents are not for you
This scent is drier and earthier than floral or fruity incense. We recommend it if you love the smell of a garden after rain, damp soil or tree bark. It also makes a good gift for someone who does not care for sweet fragrances.
Vetiver is also a common base note in perfume and appears in many men's fragrances. If you like a cologne of that kind, you will find a familiar dry, woody note in this incense too. For another woody scent, try the fresh, softly woody Satya Tree of Life.
Heatproof holder, window ajar
Once lit, blow out the flame and stand the stick in a heatproof holder. Stay nearby while it burns and let some fresh air in. To put it out early, press the glowing tip into sand or ash.
