Sárga óriás (Yellow Giant) fodder pumpkin is a traditional variety that produces large, flattened round fruits weighing up to 10–15 kg. The orange-yellow flesh is rich in carotene and provides excellent autumn-winter feed for livestock — cattle, pigs, sheep all love it. Stores well in a cool cellar.
Sowing and harvest
Sowing time: late April to mid-May, once frost danger has passed. Row spacing 200 cm, plant spacing 100 cm, sowing depth 3–4 cm. Seed requirement: 0.5 g per 10 m². Growing time: 120–140 days. Needs full sun and rich, well-cultivated soil.
Harvest before the first hard frost (late September–October). The fruits store for months in a cool, dry place. Fed raw or boiled, fodder pumpkin is one of the most economical winter feeds for small farms. Home growers also use it for autumn decoration thanks to its impressive size.
