Rocket (arugula) is the classic green of Mediterranean cuisine. Fast-growing, vitamin-rich leafy green. Can be grown in balcony boxes and pots — even in a flat. The fresh leaves have a distinctive peanut-like, slightly peppery-nutty flavour — Italian cuisine's favourite salad green.
Sowing
Sowing time: March–September in successive batches. Spacing: 20×10 cm. Sowing depth: 0.5 cm. Bolts in summer heat, so spring and autumn sowing is recommended.
Pick leaves after 3–4 weeks. Uses: pizza topping (added after baking), Italian salads, tomato-mozzarella, bruschetta. For a Mediterranean gourmet feel, rocket is essential — and growing your own means the freshest, peppery leaves whenever you need them.
