The sound world of the large friction mallet
The large flumie offers the deepest and most powerful tones of the flumie family. With a length of 26 centimeters and a rubber head of 4.5 centimeters in diameter, it contacts a larger surface area of the gong, producing more intense and longer-lasting vibration. The sound is richer, broader in space, and especially powerful on larger gongs.
Where we recommend its use
We recommend the large friction mallet primarily for large gongs, since smaller gongs cannot respond with enough mass to the energy of the head. It is ideal for sound bath climaxes, deep meditation, and sound therapy work, where the goal is to deeply move through both body and space. If you lead public sound baths or work in larger rooms, the large flumie provides the fullness and spatial presence needed to fully hold participants' attention.
Material, craftsmanship and handling
The large head is made of silicone rubber, soft yet dense, gentle on the metal surface while initiating powerful vibration. The thin plastic handle is light, balancing the weight of the larger head, allowing you to guide the motion precisely. Because of the heavier head, the playing technique also shifts: slower, longer strokes are needed, and it is advisable to hold the head near the handle for greater control. Made in China.
How to work with it
Hold the mallet loosely near the rubber head. With a slow, even motion, draw the head across the gong's surface without pressing down. The build-up of vibration may take a few seconds, but when it emerges, you will feel the entire body of the gong resonate, with sound radiating in waves. Let each tone unfold completely before beginning a new stroke. We recommend exploring different points on the gong, since each location can bring out different overtones.
Storage and longevity
Store in a dry, cool place, away from direct sunlight and high heat. After use, wipe the rubber head with a soft, dry cloth. Since the head is larger and heavier, it is best to store the mallet horizontally so it does not deform. With proper care, the flumie will retain its elasticity and sound quality for years.
