A round box made of mango wood, 12.5 cm across and 6 cm high. The black coating on the lid carries a gold compass rose, with N and S marking north and south. Behind it sits a red circle filled with a pattern of overlapping circles known as the flower of life. Golden swirling clouds, a lotus flower and thin turquoise and red ribbons run around the edge. Curved letters at the bottom read “Compass of life”. Made in India; you receive one box.
A compass for life
Old sailors’ hand-drawn charts used compass roses like this one to show the directions. On this box it reads more like a good wish. It suits someone who is choosing a new direction, whether that means a new job, a move or a long trip.
For a watch and small treasures
Lift the lid straight off, as there is no hinge; it simply sits on the rim. Inside, the wood is bare. A wristwatch, a few bracelets, rings or some small stones will fit. Take your watch off at night and you will find it here on the bedside table in the morning. The sides are plain, light mango wood, and the grain differs from box to box.
Weighing about 300 g, the box is light. Wipe the coated lid with a dry, soft cloth, and keep the box away from radiators and strong sun, which can dry out and crack the wood.
A gift for a graduation or a move
When you are looking for a small present for someone graduating, moving into a new home or setting off on a long journey, the words on the lid read as a wish for the road ahead. Put a bracelet or a small crystal inside and the gift is ready.
