River Stone Mortar and Pestle – Small (approx. 9 × 7 cm)

Hand-carved river stone mortar with matching pestle, approx. 9 × 7 cm. Solid, kitchen-ready – grinds spices, herbs and coarse salt by hand. A natural-feel.

River stone, shaped by water and hand

The mortar is carved from solid river stone – a dense, naturally rounded material smoothed by years of moving water. The carving preserves the stone's character, leaving a finely porous inside surface that grips spices and keeps them from sliding under the pestle. Every piece is unique: the colour, the markings and the small irregularities tell the story of the riverbed it came from.

The pestle

The matching pestle is also made from river stone, so the mortar and the tool share the same look and feel. The weighty end is comfortable in the hand and lets you apply firm pressure when grinding harder spice seeds such as coriander, pepper, cumin or cardamom.

What to grind in it

The small format is suited to everyday spice and herb work: coarse salt, peppercorns, coriander, cumin, cardamom, dried rosemary or thyme. It is equally useful for freshly made pesto or a spice paste – the stone base does not transfer metallic notes the way some metal tools can.

Cleaning and care

Rinse the mortar with warm water after use; avoid strong detergents, as the porous stone can hold their scent. After very aromatic spices such as garlic or chilli, grind a little coarse salt and rinse – this freshens the bowl and keeps it ready for the next use. Stored dry, the mortar can serve a kitchen for decades.
