Sound and character
This wound fifth string adds, alongside the g-tuned feeltone monochords, the perfect-fifth relation that layers above the fundamental and creates the characteristic floating sound of the instrument. The brass winding produces a warm, full vibration, and in d tuning the fifth string brings a fine, translucent light above the g fundamental. Together they form a wide, calming, well-breathing sound space.
How to use
Replace this string when it sounds noticeably dull, the winding shows visible wear, or it has broken. On the monochord, all overtone strings are tuned to g and the fifth strings to d. feeltone designs these strings for its own instruments, so to preserve the original sound image you should stay with the factory replacement. To change it, release the old string, remove it, thread in the new one and bring it slowly and evenly up to the d pitch.
Why this product
Because this fifth string is matched in gauge, material and tension to the MO-21G and MO-34G models. If you want your instrument to keep its characteristic sound built on the perfect-fifth relation, you should use the factory string, since non-original parts will easily upset the overtone balance.
Care tips
- Tune gradually, never push the string past the target pitch.
- The bare string ends are sharp and can hurt your fingers as you uncoil the ring.
- Retune more often during the first few days while the new string settles.
- Sealed, unopened strings may be returned if the seal is intact.
