A hand-painted Buddha statue in resin. The robe is red, while the face, chest and hands are finished in antique gold. It is 41 cm tall, 34 cm wide and 21 cm deep, and weighs about 2.1 kg. Made in Indonesia.
Hands resting in the lap
Both hands rest one on the other in his lap as the Buddha sits cross-legged, his eyes lowered. This is the gesture of meditation, and many people still hold their hands like this in silent sitting today. The robe covers both shoulders and falls in broad folds over his knees.
Images of the meditating Buddha recall the long sitting beneath the bodhi tree which, according to tradition, led to his enlightenment.
Long earlobes, curled hair
On the gold face, the long earlobes are easy to see. Tradition says they recall the heavy earrings Siddhartha wore as a prince, and that his earlobes stayed stretched after he gave up palace life. The hair is covered in small curls, with a little rise on top of the head. Between the curls the gold is darker, so the pattern of the hair shows even from a distance.
Broad and heavy
At 34 cm wide and 2.1 kg, it stands firmly. It suits a meditation corner, a wide chest of drawers or the top of a low cabinet, where you can see it while seated. If your walls are white, the red robe adds a warm patch of colour to the room. At 21 cm deep it is too big for a windowsill.
Each piece is painted by hand and differs slightly. Keep it indoors, dust it with a soft, dry brush and do not place it directly above a radiator.
