How many reeds are needed for an average diffuser?

For an average 100-150 ml diffuser bottle, 6-10 reeds are usually recommended. With fewer reeds, the fragrance spreads more gently and slowly, which can be particularly pleasant in a smaller room. With more, the fragrance comes through more strongly, but the oil is also used up faster. The number of reeds is one of the main means of fine-tuning the diffusion rate – it is worth experimenting to find the strength you prefer.

How long does a reed last, and when should it be replaced?

A reed usually loses its capillary efficiency after 4-6 weeks of continuous use, as the fragrance oil and dust may block the fine capillaries. At that point it is worth replacing it with a fresh one. If the fragrance suddenly fades, replacing the reeds is often enough for the existing oil to reach the surface again and resume evaporation.

Can reeds be reused or repurposed?

Used reeds already carry a saturated fragrance, so it is difficult to repurpose them for another scent – the new fragrance would mix with the old. One option is to keep the used reeds in a wooden or fabric basket as a decorative element: there they will release a gentle fragrance for weeks, while no longer functioning as an active diffuser. Fully dried reeds can also be composted, as they are made of natural material.
