Who Shakyamuni Buddha is and why his figure
Shakyamuni is the historical Buddha who lived about 2500 years ago and whose teachings form the foundation of today's Buddhism. For many, his figure is the closest and most accessible entry point to Buddhist tradition, because he is not mythical but a real teacher who lived as a human being. Those who choose this thangka often do so because they want a reminder that mindful attention is not an abstract concept but a path that can be walked for a long time.
Nepalese craftsmanship and brocade frame
The thangka is made in Nepal, where the printing and painting of religious images is a multi-generational tradition. The printed central image is accompanied by a brocade frame that evokes the traditional Tibetan colour order: a gentle alternation of warm yellow, red and blue tones. The silken texture of the brocade emphasises the central figure without dominating the composition.
Where we recommend it at home
Many people hang it on a calm wall of the living room, in the bedroom or in a meditation corner. It also looks good above a bookshelf because the 29 × 20 cm size does not dominate the hierarchy of objects. If you practise yoga or meditation, the central gaze provides a stable reference point for bringing attention back. Next to the image, a single candle or a small bowl of flowers can add a quiet, dignified atmosphere.
Details of the image and the tradition
In a Shakyamuni depiction you will usually recognise the earth-touching right hand, the lotus posture and the knot of wisdom on the forehead. The earth-touching gesture evokes the moment of enlightenment when the Buddha called the earth to witness. The traditional colour order of the brocade frame also refers to the five elements and harmonises with the warm yellowish base tone of the image.
Care and long life
Keep it away from direct strong sunlight and humid rooms; this way both the printed colours and the brocade will preserve their vividness for many years. Against dust, a soft dry brush or microfibre cloth is enough for a gentle wipe. When moving, roll it gently and wrap it in paper, not plastic.
