Petite Gemstone Bracelet – Howlite, 6 mm Beads

White howlite bracelet with grey-veined 6 mm beads on an elastic cord, about 17 cm long, in the stone's own undyed white.

White howlite beads line this petite bracelet, strung on an elastic cord. The natural beads are about 6 mm across, the bracelet is about 17 cm long, and you slip it on without a clasp. You receive one bracelet, made in China.

White stone with grey veins

Howlite is a white stone with grey, sometimes darker veins winding across it, which makes it look a little like marble. The pattern is different on every bead, and the odd bead may have a beige tint.

Named after Henry How

The stone is named after Henry How, a chemist and geologist who described it in 1868 from a site in Nova Scotia, Canada. Because it is porous, it soaks up dye easily and is often coloured turquoise. This bracelet shows howlite's own white colour.

Being softer than quartz, it can scratch, so don't keep it crammed in with hard stones or metal chains.

Howlite is said to be the stone of patience. If you like light-coloured jewellery, it goes well with denim, a white shirt or dark clothes.

Before you order, put a tape measure round your wrist. If it shows about 15–16 cm, the 17 cm bracelet will sit comfortably and a little loose.

Cream first, bracelet second

The porous stone can absorb hand cream and perfume, so put the bracelet on afterwards, once your skin is dry. That way the white beads stay free of marks.

Leave it off in the shower, and roll it over your hand rather than stretching it hard. If you want it to keep its stretch for a long time, store it lying flat in a drawer.
