Peppermint (Mentha × piperita) is a hybrid perennial in the Lamiaceae family, derived from a cross between water mint (Mentha aquatica) and spearmint (Mentha spicata). A high menthol content distinguishes peppermint from spearmint, which is carvone-dominant and sweeter.
Origin and production
The oil is sourced from the United States, from traditional mid-western peppermint-growing regions (typically Oregon, Washington and Idaho), where the climate and soil support oil with a high menthol content. It is produced by steam distillation from the fresh or lightly dried herb. This method carries the volatile aromatic compounds with water vapour, keeping thermal load limited.
