P-AW Semicircular Nail Clipper for Dogs and Cats

Small nail clipper for small dogs and cats, with semicircular stainless steel blades and a wooden handle. 12.5 cm long.

A nail clipper for dogs' and cats' claws. The cutting head is stainless steel, and its two blades curve in a semicircle. The handle is dark brown wood with two rounded finger holes and an engraved P-AW logo. It is 12.5 cm long and weighs about 20 g. Made in China.

The semicircular blades

The claw fits neatly between the two curved blades, so you can see where it will be cut before you squeeze. The stainless steel head is hard-wearing, and because the clipper is small it sits close to the paw and is easy to guide.

For small dogs and cats

Its packaging recommends it for small dogs and cats. A large dog's thick claws need a sturdier, bigger clipper.

The finger holes are rounded, and the wooden handle doesn't feel cold in your hand the way a metal one does. If your dog's claws click on the floor, it's time for a trim.

How to trim a claw

Only ever take off the tip of the claw, a little at a time. Near the base of the claw there is a living part with a blood vessel in it; don't cut close to it. On a pale claw this part shows through as pink. On a dark claw you can't see it, so go even more carefully there.

Work in good light and hold the paw firmly but gently. You don't have to do all four feet in one go; the rest can wait until the next day. After trimming, wipe the blades clean and keep the clipper somewhere dry.

If you have never trimmed claws before, ask your vet or a dog groomer to show you the first time. After seeing it done once, you'll feel more confident doing it at home.
