An offering bowl is a small vessel of respectful intention. In the Tibetan tradition the offering — incense, water, scented oil — is placed in such bowls, often arranged as a row of seven on an altar or in a meditation space. This piece is made of a copper-and-brass alloy with a warm, metallic glow.
The eight auspicious symbols
The rim of the bowl is engraved with the eight auspicious symbols of the Buddhist tradition. These are: the precious parasol, the white conch shell, the two golden fish, the endless knot, the vase of great treasures, the victory banner, the lotus flower and the eight-spoked wheel. Each is a symbol of good fortune and the spiritual path.
Use
- Place incense, clean water or scented oil in it as an offering.
- Use it on its own or with several bowls arranged in a row, on an altar or in a meditation corner.
- It measures about 8 × 4.5 cm, a hand-friendly tabletop size.
Care
Copper and brass take on a natural patina over time. To keep it brighter, wipe with a soft cloth and a mild metal polish; dry storage protects the surface.
