The heritage of a 400-year-old Japanese incense master

Nippon Kodo is one of Japan's oldest incense makers, an heir to the traditional incense culture of Kyoto. The Herb & Earth series was made for those who want to experience the scent of plants in a simple, clean way, without heavy synthetic loading. If you have previously avoided heavier, smoky Indian incense, you will appreciate this gentle, quiet aroma.

What makes this white sage different?

White sage is often known to us from American smudge bundles as a strong, pungent aroma. The Japanese interpretation is more restrained: it takes the composition in a cleaner, drier, herbal direction. You will not need to open a window, because it does not overload the air, yet its character remains noticeable.

When should you light it?

For morning attunement, quiet reading, yoga or meditation practice, or simply when you want to bring a refreshing mood into the living room. Since the sticks are shorter and thinner, the dose remains pleasant even in smaller rooms.

Burn time and use

One stick burns for roughly 20–25 minutes and leaves a pleasant after-aroma in the space. Place it in a holder, light the tip, then blow out the flame so it continues burning as an ember. Keep a heat-resistant surface beneath, and never leave it unattended.

What should you watch for?

Those sensitive to fragrances should try a shorter session first and ventilate afterwards. Do not use near children or pets, and let the ash cool completely before disposal.

Storage and longevity

Store the sticks in their original, sealed packaging in a cool, dry place. Protect them from strong sunlight and high humidity, as these can reduce the liveliness of the scent. With proper storage, the scent retains its character for months, and at the next use it gives you the same clean, herbal experience as the first time. Wipe the ceramic or wooden holder with a dry cloth occasionally.
