Nepalese Gong – Chenrezig Engraved, 60 cm, Bronze

Hand-engraved Nepalese gong with Chenrezig and the "Om Mani Padme Hum" mantra, in bronze, 60 cm diameter, 12.5 kg. Felt mallet included.

You will find here a large 60 cm Nepalese gong, engraved with the image of Chenrezig, the Buddha of compassion in Tibetan Buddhism. Alongside the finely chased details, the great mantra "Om Mani Padme Hum" appears. The gong sounds with a deep, richly layered tone.

The characteristic tone of the Nepalese gong

This gong begins with a deep fundamental tone, with many overtones layering one upon another to create a long sustain. Struck nearer the rim, the sound becomes lighter, so sound-therapy practitioners can draw various nuances from the same instrument. The crash element is restrained, making it well suited to both concert halls and quiet meditation spaces.

Chenrezig and "Om Mani Padme Hum"

The engraving depicts Chenrezig, the Buddha of compassion, known in the Tibetan tradition as the one who listens to the suffering of beings. The great mantra "Om Mani Padme Hum" is held by tradition to contain six syllables that lead toward liberation. The fine carvings extend across the gong's surface, making the instrument itself a meditative sight.

Material and forging

The gong is made from a traditional high-quality bronze alloy of copper and tin. Nepalese craftspeople shape the surface with expert forging so that the tone is full and balanced. The weight of 12.5 kg shows that this is a serious piece, suited to concert-level sound.

How you may play the gong

A felt-headed mallet is included with the gong, so you can begin to play it straight away. A softer mallet brings out a deep, droning tone; a harder mallet draws a clearer, more penetrating sound. A gong stand (not included) is recommended for unimpeded resonance. It is best to strike slightly off the centre, so that the fundamental tone develops fully.

For whom we recommend it

We recommend the gong to sound-therapy centres, yoga studios, concert venues, or devoted private practitioners seeking a deep meditative sound at home. The 60 cm size fills a large room, so a medium-sized space at minimum is advisable.
