What lava stone is and where it comes from
Lava stone is made of volcanic deep rock: as molten lava cools quickly, a tiny air-bubble structure forms inside. Thanks to this its surface is slightly textured yet not scratchy, so it gently abrades dead skin cells from the body surface. The stone is dark grey with black flecks and relatively light – it does not tire the wrist when held.
How you can use it day to day
It suits heels, elbows, soles and the firmer areas of the knee, and even the tightened skin of the calves. Once or twice a week after a lukewarm shower apply it with a circular motion for two to three minutes to softened skin – hardened layers ease up more readily, and after moisturising you will notice quicker regeneration by the next morning.
Why the string is an advantage
With the cotton string threaded through the stone you can hang it next to the showerhead or on a hook so it ventilates from all sides. It does not get stuck in a soap dish, does not stay waterlogged and does not mould – a common issue with natural sponges. The hanging loop is large enough to slide onto a nail or coat-hook as well.
Keeping it clean at home
After use rinse it with clean water, hang it up and let it dry. Once a month soak it for five minutes in lukewarm water with a few drops of vinegar – this also disinfects any residues transferred from the skin and refreshes the stone's pores. For stronger soap residue, you can scrub it with a soft toothbrush.
Lifespan
Volcanic rock does not wear quickly, so a single piece lasts two to three years even with regular use. If the surface becomes smooth over time, briskly scrub it with a dry towel – the porous structure re-emerges. The cotton string can be replaced if it frays, so the stone can keep serving you in the bathroom for longer.
