The pearly, rainbow shimmer inside the shell is different on every piece; a fragment of the sea that works equally well as a bowl and as an ornament.
About mother-of-pearl and using the shell
Mother-of-pearl is the inner layer of the shell, prized for centuries for its fine, light-playing surface. Such shells are traditionally used when burning white sage (smudging): placing the smouldering herb in the shell safely catches the smoke and ash. If you use it this way, add a little sand to the bottom so the shell does not get too hot.
Good to know
The shell measures about 15–16 cm and is a natural product, so its shape, colour and sheen are unique to each piece. The pearl within the shell may sometimes be not fully developed – a feature of its natural origin.
Another use
Beyond smudging, it makes a lovely holder for rings, earrings or other small treasures on a dressing table or nightstand.
Care
Wipe with a soft, dry cloth. Avoid prolonged soaking and chemicals so the mother-of-pearl sheen is preserved.
