Tulsi (Holy Basil) Mala – 108-Bead Prayer Strand

Tulsi (Holy Basil) mala, a 108-bead prayer strand for counting mantras and deepening meditation, about 40.5 cm long.

An intimate row of pale, light tulsi wood beads – a prayer strand from the most sacred wood of the Hindu tradition.

Tulsi (holy basil)

Tulsi is a relative of basil and the most sacred wood of the Hindu tradition; in Indian temples it is revered as a living goddess. A well-known legend tells that Vishnu brought it forth for the good of humanity. A mala of tulsi wood is regarded by tradition as an intimate companion to devotion and meditation. These are traditional and cultural ideas, not medical claims.

The 108-bead mala

A mala is the prayer strand of the Hindu and Buddhist traditions, originally used to count mantras in meditation. A larger guru bead closes the 108 beads, standing for wisdom, while the small cylinder above it represents emptiness. The beads pass one by one between the fingers while attention rests on the meaning and vibration of the words.

How to use it

Hold the mala in your hand during meditation or mantra recitation and move from bead to bead; through the day it can be worn wrapped around the wrist.

Material and craft
