Május királya (May King) butterhead lettuce is one of the oldest and most reliable lettuce varieties in Hungarian home gardens. Recommended for early outdoor growing — slow to develop a flower stem, so it's also suitable for autumn and spring forcing under cover. Forms a medium-large, firm head with pleasant flavour and crisp texture.
Sowing
Sowing time: March–April outdoors, or September under cover for the autumn–spring season. Spacing: 30×25 cm. Sowing depth: 0.5 cm. Prefers cool, moist soil.
The heads are ready 6–8 weeks after sowing in spring. A classic home garden lettuce — for sandwiches, hamburgers, fresh spring salads. The variety's slow-bolting nature means the harvest window is long, even into early summer.
