Lovage (Levisticum officinale) is the classic soup herb of Hungarian cuisine. Vigorous (hollow stem grows 1.5–2 m tall), perennial plant. Loves damp, moist soils.

Sow in March–April. Row spacing 50 cm, plant spacing 40 cm, sowing depth 1.5 cm. Space-demanding perennial.
Meat soup, tomato soup, gulyás, főzelék. Fresh leaves give a Vegeta-like flavour.
