Sound and character
A 45 cm frame drum already has a fuller, more breathing voice. This size needs a cord that can handle many turns of lacing while still tightening evenly. Horsehide does this beautifully: strong, flexible enough, and the knots hold their shape so the drum keeps a clear, stable sound for years.
How to use
The cord is cut to fit a 45 cm frame drum and pre-sliced into long strips. Soak it in lukewarm water until it softens, then begin the classic star or cross lacing on the back of the drum. Wet rawhide stretches under your hands; as it dries, it tightens further and finds the final voice of the drum.
