Sound and character
A 40 cm drum has a deeper, more characterful voice, and it needs stable, well-distributed lacing to support that voice. Horsehide cord is strong yet flexible: it tolerates tension well and keeps the frame in shape as it dries. The way you build the lacing decides whether the result is bright and clear or deep and soft.
How to use
The cord is cut to fit a 40 cm diameter frame drum, so there is no waste and no need to splice. Feeltone slices it lengthwise into long strips, ready for the classic star pattern on the back of the drum. Before you begin, soak the cord in lukewarm water until it softens and becomes stretchy.
Why this product
- Exact length for a 40 cm drum
- Durable, traditionally prepared horsehide
- The same material Feeltone uses for their own ritual drums
- Pairs perfectly with other Feeltone drum-building parts
Care tips
- Ideally use lacing cord and drumhead from the same animal, so they tighten evenly as they dry
- Keep a bowl of lukewarm water nearby during lacing
- Keep away from children: the long cord poses a strangulation hazard
