This set contains all four Koshi chimes. The notes of their eight rods, with the maker’s own description:
- Earth (Terra): G C E F G C E G, C major; the deepest, warm and enveloping
- Water (Aqua): A D F G A D F A, D minor pentatonic; soft, clear and flowing
- Air (Aria): A C E A B C E B, A minor; clear, light and airy
- Fire (Ignis): G B D G B D G A, G major pentatonic; the liveliest and brightest
All four use only notes from the white keys of a piano, and together they make up the seven notes of the C major scale. The maker designed them to ring together in any combination.
Each has a treated bamboo cylinder, 6.3 cm in diameter and 16.5 cm tall, and is handmade at the foot of the Pyrenees. The rods are tuned to A = 432 Hz, so next to a piano tuned to 440 Hz they sound a shade lower.
They ring in your hand when held by the cord and turned slowly, and in the wind when hung up. Outdoors, hang them only in a covered spot, as rain harms the bamboo. They are not toys, and the maker says they are not suitable for children under three.
All four fit on the wooden Deer of Light Koshi stand.
