spring poppy blue Duna seeds (2.5 g)

Low-morphine spring poppy with dark blue seed colour — early flowering, lodging-resistant, a favourite Hungarian ingredient for cakes and pastries.

Kék Duna spring poppy is a tried-and-tested variety in the Pannonkert range, with low morphine content and beautiful dark blue seeds — ideal for food-grade home and small-grower production. The plant grows tall (110–120 cm) with 3–4 side branches, and is resistant to lodging even in windy weather.

Sowing and harvest

Sowing time: in spring, even as early as February or March into late winter snowmelt. Row spacing 45 cm, plant spacing 6–9 cm, sowing depth only 1.2 cm — sow shallowly and keep the seedbed evenly moist until germination. The seedlings emerge in 10–14 days at 8–10 °C.

Poppy is the classic ingredient of Hungarian baking: bejgli, poppy-seed strudel, mákos guba would be unthinkable without it. Harvest when the seed capsules are fully ripe and have dried on the plant. Home-grown poppy seed is far more aromatic than store-bought.
