The kathag is one of the most recognisable Tibetan blessing shawls, traditionally used to express respect, good wishes and blessing. This set offers five shawls in the colours of the five Dhyani Buddhas, each 185 × 35 centimetres, with a total weight of 227 grams. The shawls are made in Nepal from polyester, and we recommend them to you for gift-giving, altar decoration or personal ceremonies.
How the kathag is traditionally used
The kathag is especially cherished in Tibetan and Buddhist cultures: it is customary to offer it when welcoming guests, during farewells, at birthdays, weddings, in front of an altar or when greeting monastics. The gesture of giving expresses blessing and good wishes without needing to put them into words. You can also offer them to loved ones at important moments.
The meaning of the five colours
The set includes white, yellow, red, green and blue tones, which correspond to the five Dhyani Buddhas. This colour combination offers a rich visual experience and versatile use: it suits various occasions, ceremonies of different moods, or simply provides a colourful decoration for your altar and meditation corner.
The 8 auspicious symbols on the shawls
The shawls are adorned with the 8 traditional auspicious symbols, including the precious parasol, the golden fish, the treasure vase, the lotus, the unending knot and others. The precious parasol expresses the protection of respect and blessing, the golden fish represents freedom and fearless movement, and the treasure vase symbolises ongoing abundance.
Size, material and care
Each shawl measures 185 × 35 centimetres, long enough to ceremonially wrap around the shoulders or to be offered with outstretched arms. The material is polyester, so it is light and less prone to creasing. You can wash the shawls on a cool, gentle cycle, and it is best to dry them in the shade to preserve the colours.
Storage and gift-giving
The set is delivered in a paper bag, providing gentle packaging. If you plan it as a gift, the paper bag already gives a tidy appearance, and you can easily wrap it further in thin tissue paper. Store it in a dry, dust-free place, preferably flat and unfolded, so the shawls remain crease-free and ready for the next occasion.
