Benzoin is one of the warmest, most comforting of all incense resins. Its smoke is sweet, vanilla-like and softly balsamic, lingering gently in the air. For anyone who loves deep, soothing scents, it quickly becomes a favourite.
What is benzoin resin?
Benzoin is the hardened resin of Southeast Asian Styrax trees, used for centuries in incense and perfumery. Its naturally vanilla, balsamic character has made it a prized base note in fragrance. The rising smoke is round and warm rather than sharp.
How to burn it
Place the resin on glowing charcoal or on an incense sieve. On a sieve the burn is slower and gentler than directly on charcoal, so the scent unfolds gradually. It also blends well with other resins; for mixes, a slightly larger burning surface works best.
What it is good for
In the incense tradition benzoin is known as a scent of calm and homecoming. It can accompany quiet evenings, meditation, or simply warm the mood of a room.
Good to know
As a natural resin, the strength of the scent and the size of the pieces may vary slightly. Always burn in a heatproof dish, supervised, in a well-ventilated space.
