This richly worked, silver-coloured incense holder is decorated with the eight auspicious Buddhist symbols (the Ashtamangala) and made for the safe burning of thinner incense sticks. It is about 12 cm long, and its cool, silvery tone gives a clean, quiet elegance.

The eight auspicious symbols

The eight emblems form one of the best-known sets of symbols in the Buddhist tradition. By tradition the vase symbolises the richness of the teaching (the Dharma), longevity and prosperity. The lotus stands for transformation on the spiritual path: just as a lotus rises from the mud and unfolds into a pure flower, so our own roughness can transform into the beauty of love, compassion and wisdom. The victory banner evokes victory over negative, destructive forces. The remaining emblems – the endless knot, the conch, the pair of golden fish, the wheel and the parasol – together carry the idea of wholeness and good fortune.

Craft and use

The silver-coloured surface lends a cool, modern mood and looks beautiful in a meditation corner or on an altar. Place the incense on a stable, heat-resistant surface, away from children and pets, and clear of flammable objects and draughts.

Care

After burning, let it cool completely, then wipe it with a soft, dry cloth. Avoid harsh chemicals so the fine decoration stays beautiful for a long time.
