HEM's white sage incense sticks come in a plain hexagonal box and are made in India. The box is about 25 cm long and fits in a drawer or next to your incense holder.
Sage for clearing a room
Native peoples of North America have long burned white sage in their ceremonies. Many people today draw on that tradition and light sage to clear a room in the spiritual sense: when they move into a new home, after a difficult conversation, or at the end of a big spring clean.
The custom is to carry the smoke slowly around the room, not forgetting the corners, and then open a window. Everything else is up to you. Some people say a few words of good wishes as they go, others simply light a stick and let it burn.
It is common to follow sage with a softer scent, such as lavender or rose. If you would like to do the same, wait until the sage smoke has cleared.
Stick or bundle
A traditional sage bundle has to be held in the hand, smoulders for a long time and tends to drop ash. A stick is simpler, because it stands in the holder and burns evenly. If you would still rather have a bundle, you will find them among our sage smudge bundles.
Window open, someone in the room
Set the stick in a heat-proof holder, well away from curtains and paper, and stay with it while it glows. The smoke goes into the air of the room, so open a window during or after burning.
Where there are small children, pets or birds, wait until they have left the room. To put it out, press the glowing end into sand and check a few minutes later that it has gone out.
