A hexagonal box of HEM incense sticks from the Palo Santo Masala series, scented with palo santo and cinnamon. Made in India.

You get one hexagonal box of HEM incense sticks, made in India. In the Palo Santo Masala series, palo santo is always paired with a second scent, and in this box that scent is cinnamon. The black box has orange details, and the side reads “Palo Santo Cinnamon”.

Wood and spice on one stick

Palo santo is a tree native to South America, and its Spanish name means “holy wood”. Its scent is woody and slightly sweet. Cinnamon adds a warm, spicy note, the kind you notice in the kitchen when a cake or baked apples are in the oven. If you like spicy scents but would rather keep the wood too, this pairing gives you both.

Masala is a Hindi word for a spice blend. In India it is also the name for incense sticks coated in a thick paste.

Cinnamon on the first day of the month

Cinnamon is traditionally said to bring abundance into a home, and palo santo smoke is used to clear a space energetically. That is why many people light a stick on the first day of the month or after moving house. On cold evenings, when it gets dark early, its spicy scent is a popular choice too.

Lighting it and putting it out

Light the tip, let it flame for a few seconds, then blow it out. The ember slowly works its way down while a thin line of smoke rises. Stand the stick in an incense holder or on a heat-resistant plate, as the ash will fall. Never leave it burning unattended, put it out before you go to bed or leave the house, and air the room afterwards.
