Chandan-scented HEM incense sticks in a dark red hexagonal box decorated with traditional Indian patterns. The box is about 25 cm long, the sticks are made in India, and the scent is spicy and woody.
Chandan means sandalwood
Chandan is the Hindi word for sandalwood. In India, sandalwood is ground into a paste that worshippers use to mark their foreheads, and statues are anointed with it during ceremonies. Tradition links the scent of sandalwood with prayer and meditation.
The most famous sandalwood grows around Mysore in southern India, where the wood has been carved and distilled for centuries.
Spicier than HEM's sandalwood
HEM also makes a separate sandalwood incense, which is woody. This chandan adds spicy notes to the woody base. If you like sandalwood but want something spicier, give this one a try.
A gift for someone who loves India
With its Indian patterns, the dark red box makes a lovely small present. You could give it to someone who does yoga, meditates or has been to India and likes the incense there. Paired with an incense holder, it can be lit straight away.
When you light it, stand the holder on a heat-proof surface away from curtains and paper, and stay in the room while it burns. Air the room afterwards.
To put it out, press the glowing end into sand or against the metal plate of the holder. Before you go to bed or leave the house, check that it has really gone out.
